Estimates Revision: Mexico subnational - GVA by industry
Tuesday, 09 May 2017 18:50 ET
By Mary Krajsa
Summary
April 2017 -- For our system of subnational estimates for Mexico, we have added 10 years of history, and have redefined the industry aggregates primary (PRI) and secondary (SEC) for consistency with our European estimates (5,763 quarterly series impacted).
Detail

1. Extension of history

Previously, our subnational level series started at 2003Q1 (see related article). We have extended them back to 1993Q1 by using corresponding growth rates; they now match the national estimates.

2. Redefinition of industry aggregates PRI and SEC

Motivation: We estimate gross value added by industry for Mexico using SCIAN, the localization of NAICS. For Mexico, SCIAN industry 21 (mining, quarrying, and oil and gas extraction) was included in aggregate SEC (secondary industries / transformation) instead of PRI (primary industries / extractive).

Old definitions for Mexico (SCIAN):

  • PRI = 11
  • SEC = 21 to 22; 23; 31 to 33; 56

European definitions (NACE Rev. 2 and SCIAN equivalents):

  • PRI = A to B = 11; 21
  • SEC = C to F = 22 to 23; 31 to 33; 56

Response: To facilitate consistent time series analysis and international comparability, we have decided to align our industry aggregates for Mexico to those for Europe. Consequently, values for aggregate PRI have expanded at the expense of SEC. Impacted series include the nominal/real- and MXN/USD/EUR-valued versions, for example:

  • RGDPPRIUSDQ.IMEX  = Primary industries, (in euros) - for Mexico
  • RGDPSEC$Q.IMEX_ZA = Secondary industries (in real pesos) - for Zacatecas [state]

Approximate concordance of pertinent portions SCIAN and NACE Rev. 2 (official branch code, Data Buffet concept code fragment, description):
