New Data: U.S. - PPI weights
Tuesday, 23 May 2017 13:29 ET
By Edward Chaplin
Summary
May 2017 -- Data Buffet now carries the weights for the BLS producer price index. Reported in the PPI Relative Importance Tables, each weight is the percent contribution of the individual or composite commodity to the aggregate PPI. (3,184 new and 852 defunct annual series from 2007.)
Detail

The series reside in the historical catalog (United States » Price » Producer Price Index (PPI) » Producer Price Index Weights (PPIW)) and include, for example:

  • PPIW%TTUA.IUSA       = Producer price index weight: All commodities, (%)
  • PPIW%1565UA.IUSA     = Dental equipment and supplies, (%)
  • PPIW%01130301UA.IUSA = Sweet potatoes, (%)

Because catalog locations are subject to change, the upper-right search box on DataBuffet.com provides a "find in catalog" mode that accepts a mnemonic.

Please be aware that:

  • The BLS regularly changes the commodities tracked in the PPI. Similarly, the weight series have varied start and end dates.
