Data Change: Ireland subnational - QNHS and LFS
Friday, 21 Sep 2018 10:06 ET
By Jaclyn Zylka
Summary
May 2018 -- To produce and disseminate labor force status measures for Ireland, the source has replaced the "Quarterly National Household Survey (QNHS)" using NUTS 2013 areas with the "Labour Force Survey (LFS)" using NUTS 2016 areas (193 quarterly series 1997 to 2017, replaced by 222 from 1998).
Detail

On 16 January, the source wrote (citation):

The LFS has replaced the QNHS as the official source of data for employment and unemployment in Ireland.

And (citation):

The Quarterly National Household Survey (QNHS) was first introduced by the CSO in Q4 1997 and has been used to produce estimates of employment and unemployment for Ireland since its introduction. In recent years, however, the CSO identified a need to modernize and update the QNHS and therefore it is now replacing the survey with the new Labour Force Survey (LFS) from Q3 2017. Therefore, with effect from Q3 2017 the LFS is the official source of estimates of employment and unemployment for Ireland.

In response, we have:

  1. Archived the predecessors (QNHS, 1997Q4 to 2017Q2) by renaming with an "_17" specifier, by marking the metadata as discontinued, and by segregating in the catalog.
  2. Created replacements series (LFS), starting in 1998Q1.
  3. Updated geo codes from NUTS 2013 codes to NUTS 2016.
  4. Assigned standardized mnemonics.
  5. Added as-reported seasonally adjusted series.
  6. Created seasonally adjusted supplements.
  7. Renamed the release, from Quarterly National Household Survey (QNHS) to Labour Force Survey (LFS).
  8. Refurbished the catalog.

Dataset properties:

  • Classifications: ILOD Economic Status, NACE Rev. 2
  • Measurements: Thousands of persons (Ths. #) or percent (%)
  • Adjustments: Seasonally adjusted (SA) or not (NSA)
  • Native frequency: Quarterly
  • Start date: As early as 1998Q1
  • Geo coverage:
    • Country
    • All 3 NUTS (2016) level 2 areas
    • All 8 NUTS (2016) level 3 areas
    • See attached concordance
  • Do all concept-geo pairs exist? No
    • Only for the Key Indicators - Both Sexes do all 12 geos apply.
    • All other concepts exist for the country geo only.
  • Indicators:
    • Working-age population (persons aged 15 years and over)
    • Labor force
    • Employment
    • Unemployment
    • ILO participation rate (15 years and over)
    • ILO unemployment rate (15 to 74 years)

The active series reside in the historical catalog (Ireland » Labor and Wages » Labor Force Survey (LFS)) and include, for example:

  • LWQEMTAFUQ.IIRL   = Employment - Both sexes - Agriculture; forestry and fishing [A], (Ths. #, NSA)
  • LWQUNTUQ.IIRL_SO  = Unemployed, (Ths. #, NSA) - for NUT 2 South
  • LWQEMTUQ.IIRL_SOW = Employment, (Ths. #, NSA) - for NUTS 3 South-West
  • LW%PRMAQ.IIRL     = Participation rate - Males, (%, SA)

The predecessors reside under (Ireland » Labor and Wages » Quarterly National Household Survey (QNHS)), for example:

  • LWQLFT_17UQ.IIRL_MIW = [DISCONTINUED] In Labor Force, (Ths. #, NSA) - for NUTS 3 Mid-West
  • LWQEMAF_17UQ.IIRL    = [DISCONTINUED] Employment: Agriculture; forestry and fishing [01-03], (Ths. #, NSA)
  • LW%PRM_17UQ.IIRL     = [DISCONTINUED] Participation Rate: Male, (%, NSA)

Because catalog locations are subject to change, the upper-right search box on DataBuffet.com provides a "find in catalog" mode that accepts a mnemonic.

Please be aware that

CSO uses the term "economic sector" where NACE and NAICS use "activity" and "industry", respectively.
