Data Change: South Africa subnational - Population by sex and age - Source
Friday, 16 Jun 2017 10:52 ET
By Elizabeth Fitts
Summary
April 2017 -- For subnational population estimates by sex and age for South Africa, we have switched from harvesting to reconstituting to fully handle the official revision schedule (209 annual series 2001-2016 replaced by 306 from 2001, 35 new calculated annual series from 2001).
Detail

So as to correctly harvest annual population revisions from the source, we have decided to expand our harvest to include age bracket, sex and province (see related article). We use these to calculate "both sexes" totals for each age bracket, for each geo (provinces and nation).

The predecessors run from 2001 to 2016. The replacements have an unchanged start date and carry a secondary source citation of "Moody's Analytics Calculated." Figures are unitary counts (#). Geo coverage is the nation and all nine provinces.

The replacements can be found in the historical catalog (South Africa » Demographics » Population » By sex and age) and include, for example (old » new):

  • VSQPOPE1014UA.IZAF_FS » VSQPOPET1014UA.IZAF_FS = Mid-year population estimate - Both sexes - Ages 10 to 14, (#) - for Free State
  • VSQPOPEMUA.IZAF_GT    » VSQPOPEMTUA.IZAF_GT    = Males - All ages - for Gauteng
  • VSQPOPEFUA.IZAF_ZN    » VSQPOPEFTUA.IZAF_ZN    = Females - All ages - for KwaZulu-Natal
  • VSQPOPETUA.IZAF       » VSQPOPETTUA.IZAF       = Both sexes - All ages

Because catalog locations are subject to change, the upper-right search box on DataBuffet.com provides a "find in catalog" mode that accepts a mnemonic.
