These tables provide annual data for a selection of key statistics under the following themes: births, deaths, marriages, divorces, civil partnerships and civil partnership dissolutions. Figures for the latest periods may be provisional, these will be updated to final figures when data is available. Commentary on trends in annual birth and death statistics can be found in the birth and death registrations summary tables.
From May 2014, quarterly data for births, deaths and conceptions previously included in this release have been discontinued. For more information see the ONS consultation on statistical products.
The United Kingdom Statistics Authority has designated these statistics as National Statistics, in accordance with the Statistics and Registration Service Act 2007 and signifying compliance with the Code of Practice for Official Statistics.
Designation can be broadly interpreted to mean that the statistics:
Once statistics have been designated as National Statistics it is a statutory requirement that the Code of Practice shall continue to be observed.
Birth statistics present data on births that occur and are then registered in England and Wales. Statistics are based on information collected at birth registration.
Annual data are released in a series of theme-specific packages, usually between July and December. Information on different packages is covered under the Relevance section. The packages contain historical data, where available, giving as long a time series as possible.
Death rates data is also available. Tables contain data for death rates, cause of death data by sex and age and death registrations by area of residence.
