Data Note: Brazil - Credit operations outstanding - Metadata
Friday, 28 Jul 2017 15:57 ET
By Megan Hilaman
Summary
July 2017 -- For Brazil, the "credit operations outstanding" dataset has recently been extended and now spans four currency breaks. We have altered our metadata to indicate this (one monthly series impacted).
Detail

The start date has been moved from March 2007 to January 1988. The source's labeling is "c.m.u. Mil." for "current monetary units." In Data Buffet, we prefer to be specific, and use ISO 4217 alpha-3 currency codes. To document the four breaks, we have:

  • Changed the unit-descriptor to "(Mil. BRC/BRN/BRE/BRR/BRL, NSA)"
  • In the "source" metadata, added the notation "[Break in currency from Jan1989, Jan 1990, Aug1993, Jul1994]"

Over the history of the series, the currencies are:

  1. Cruzado (BRC) - January 1988 to December 1988
  2. Cruzado novo (BRN) - January 1989 to December 1989
  3. Third cruzeiro (BRE) - January 1990 to July 1993
  4. Cruzeiros real (BRR) - August 1993 to June 1994
  5. Real (BRL) - June 1994 to present

The series resides in the historical catalog (Brazil » Banking » Credit Indicators) and is:

  • MBLLTSUM.IBRA = Banking: Credit operations outstanding - Total, (Mil. BRC/BRN/BRE/BRR/BRL, NSA)

Because catalog locations are subject to change, the upper-right search box on DataBuffet.com provides a "find in catalog" mode that accepts a mnemonic.
