Estimates Revision: U.S.subnational - Consumer Credit - Method
Friday, 24 Feb 2017 11:50 ET
By Allyson Fry
Summary
February 2017 -- We have revised our estimates of state and regional consumer credit to align more closely with national, break-adjusted data (192 quarterly series revised from 1978).
Detail

Context

The U.S. Federal Reserve Board (FRB) disseminates monthly, national, consumer credit data with a break in between November and December 2010 (see related article) in the G.19 statistical release. Moody's Analytics produces break-adjusted counterparts (See related article).

Previous methodology

Our state-level revolving and non-revolving consumer credit data had previously been squeezed to quarterly version of the non-break adjusted national series.

Revised methodology

We now squeeze state-level revolving and non-revolving consumer credit to the break-adjusted national series. As we have done previously, we then calculate total consumer credit for each state as the sum of revolving and non-revolving consumer credit. Last, we aggregate the state-level data to census regions.

The estimates reside in the historical catalog (United States » Financial » G.19 - Consumer Credit(FRB) » Moody's Analytics Estimates) and include, for example:

  • RCCALLQ.CENC = Total consumer installment credit for East North Central Census Region
  • RCCREVQ.ND = Revolving consumer installment credit for North Dakota
  • RCCNREVQ.VA = Non-Revolving consumer installment credit for Virginia

Because catalog locations are subject to change, the upper-right search box on DataBuffet.com provides a "find in catalog" mode that accepts a mnemonic.
