Data Note: U.S. Virgin Islands - Hurricanes Irma and Maria [UPDATED]
Wednesday, 11 Oct 2017 16:57 ET
By Patrick Smith
Summary
September 14, 2017 -- We expect that our data coverage of the U.S. Virgin Islands will be delayed or interrupted as a result of Hurricanes Irma and Maria. [Updated October 11, 2017.]
Detail

Although the web sites of our local statistical sources are operative, our email inquiries to them are bouncing, and we expect that the aftermath of Hurricane Irma will impede production of statistics for some time. We are monitoring the situation.

Our sources are:

  • U.S. Virgin Islands Bureau of Economic Research (VIBER)
  • Virgin Islands Department of Labor (VIDOL)
  • U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) of the U.S. Department of Commerce
  • U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) of the U.S. Department of Labor
  • U.S. Employment and Training Administration (ETA) of the U.S. Department of Labor

The annual national accounts for USVI are published by the BEA, and although its mainland operations are unaffected by the hurricane, the collection of underlying data may be. Similarly, unemployment insurance claims by state are aggregated by the ETA.

The territory has three major islands:

  • St. Croix
  • St. John
  • St. Thomas

  • Geo codes for insular territories - Although USVI is an insular territory of the United States, for statistical purposes it is often convenient to consider it a separate country, and to that end we have been migrating our mnemonics from the state-style geo code "VI" to the country-style geo code "IVIR".

Updates

  • Sep. 14 - Original version.
  • Sep. 18 - Corrected title; added reference hyperlinks; added Hurricane Maria.
  • Oct. 11 - Additional sources and links.
