Motivation: When benchmarking our estimates of detailed GDP for Nigeria, we previously used annual data from the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD), but our preference is to use nationally-sourced data. We have recently obtained such data from the National Bureau of Statistics of Nigeria (NBS), viz., quarterly and annual GDP by expenditure, at current and constant prices.
Old methodology
- Benchmark estimates to annual GDP(E) from UNSD.
- Backfill using growth rates of annual GDP(E) from World Bank.
- Frequency-convert (2010 to current) total GDP from annual to quarterly using quarterly GDP from World Bank.
- Frequency-convert (1960 to 2009) total GDP from annual to quarterly using linear interpolation.
- Frequency-convert (1960 to current) expenditure components from annual to quarterly using linear interpolation.
- Squeeze components to total GDP to ensure additive integrity.
- Compute trade balance, changes in inventories, and implicit price deflators as identities.
New methodology
- Benchmark estimates to quarterly GDP(E) from NBS.
- Backfill (1960 to 1980) annual GDP(E) from NBS using growth rates from UNSD and World Bank.
- Frequency-convert (2) from annual to quarterly using linear interpolation.
- Backfill (1960 to 2006) estimates using the growth rates from (3).
- Forward-fill GDP totals using quarterly GDP(O) from NBS.
- As above.
- As above.
What you will see: All periods revised. Properties are otherwise unchanged.
The estimates reside in the historical catalog (Nigeria » National Accounts » by Expenditure » Moody's Analytics Estimated) and include, for example:
- RNALEGDPAQ.INGA = National Accounts: Expenditure approach - Gross domestic product, (Mil. NGN, SAAR)
- RNACEEXAQ.INGA = Exports, (Mil. 2010 NGN, SAAR)
- RPDIGAQ.INGA = Implicit price deflator - Government consumption, (Index 2010=100, SA)
Because catalog locations are subject to change, the upper-right search box on DataBuffet.com provides a "find in catalog" mode that accepts a mnemonic.
