Data Change: Cyprus - National accounts (A) - Re-referenced to 2010
Monday, 05 Nov 2018 10:00 ET
By Phillip Thorne
Summary
November 2018 -- Concurrent with dissemination of national accounts results for Cyprus for 2018Q2, the source has advanced the currency reference year from 2005 to 2010, for both the quarterly and annual presentations (92 annual series 1995 to 2017, replaced from 1995). We have synchronized our supplements.
Detail

On 10 September, the source wrote (citation):

The Statistical Service announces the revision of National Accounts for the years 2016-2017.
[...]
The revision for 2016 is due to the incorporation of the data of the annual economic surveys, while for 2017 it is due to the revision of the short-term economic indicators.
Furthermore, a rebase of the reference year (2010 from 2005) was carried out for the production of volume measures, as well as the application of the non-additivity approach in the chain-linking method for the time series 1995-2017.

In response, we have:

  1. Archived the 92 predecessors (currency reference year 2005, both nominal and real subsets) by renaming with an "_05" specifier, marking metadata as discontinued, and segregating in the catalog.
  2. Created 92 one-for-one replacements (reference 2010).
  3. Added one reported series we had not previously extracted (population).
  4. Assigned standardized mnemonics where necessary.
  5. Computed four supplements (trade balance, deflator, etc.).
  6. Refurbished the catalog.

Active dataset properties:

  • Measurements:
    • Euros at current prices (EUR), euros at chained year-2010 prices (Ch. 2010 EUR), millions thereof (Mil. EUR), etc.
    • Year-over-year percent change at current prices (% Y/Y) or "% annual change at volume measures" (Vol. 2010 % Y/Y)
    • Thousands of persons (Ths. #)
  • Native frequency: Annual
  • Start dates: 1995 or 1996 (unchanged)
  • Subject to revisions: Yes

The active series reside in the historical catalog (Cyprus » National accounts » By expenditure » Annual » Ref 2010) and the predecessors under the associated (Ref 2005) node. They include, for example:

  • NACEGDP_05UA.ICYP = [DISCONTINUED] Expenditure approach - Gross domestic product, (Mil. Ch. 2005 EUR)
  • NAHEGDPUA.ICYP    = Expenditure approach - Gross domestic product, (Mil. Ch. 2010 EUR)
  • NALEGFCFTEUA.ICYP = Gross fixed capital formation - Transport equipment, (Mil. EUR)

And (Cyprus » National accounts » By income » Annual » Ref 2010), for example:

  • NACIGNI_05UA.ICYP    = [DISCONTINUED] Income approach - Gross national income, (Mil. Ch. 2005 EUR)
  • NAHIGNIUA.ICYP       = Income approach - Gross national income, (Mil. Ch. 2010 EUR)
  • NA%ICGNI%C_05UA.ICYP = [DISCONTINUED] Per capita real GNI - Volume growth, (% Y/Y)
  • NA%IHGNI%PYUA.ICYP   = Growth in per capita real GNI, (Vol. 2010 % Y/Y)

And (Cyprus » National accounts » By value add » Annual » Ref 2010), for example:

  • NALSGDP_05UA.ICYP  = [DISCONTINUED] Production approach - Gross domestic product, (Mil. EUR)
  • NALSGDPUA.ICYP     = Production approach - Gross domestic product, (Mil. EUR)
  • NAHSGVAREUA.ICYP   = GVA - Real estate, (Mil. Ch. 2010 EUR)
  • NALSTLSUA.ICYP     = Taxes less subsidies

Added series we did not previously carry:

  • NAQPOPUA.ICYP = Population

Computed supplements as identities:

  • NAHETBUA.ICYP    = Trade balance, (Mil. Ch. 2010 EUR)
  • NALETBUA.ICYP    = Trade balance, (Mil. EUR)
  • NAIEDFGDPUA.ICYP = Implicit price deflator of GDP, (Index 2010=100)
  • NALSTLSUA.ICYP   = Taxes less subsidies, (Mil. EUR)

Please be aware that

The reported nominal and real subsets are not entirely parallel:

  • GDP(E) GFCF: Nominal has separate "non-residential buildings" and "other construction works", but real has a combined asset category.
  • GDP(O): Nominal has separate "taxes on products" and "subsidies on products", but real has a combined "taxes less subsidies" item.

For mnemonics of the real series, the third letter is now "H" instead of "C", to indicate that the inflation adjustment method is chained prices rather than constant prices.

Values for 2017 (using the 2005 currency reference year) were initially published by CYSTAT on 16 March. The re-referenced data through 2017 were published on 10 September and partially revised on 9 October.
