TitleFAQ: U.S. - Geography of New York City (2010 Delineations)
AuthorPhillip Thorne
Question

Under the Census 2010 delineations, what counties comprise the New York MSA, metropolitan division, and city (IUSA_MNEY, IUSA_DMNEY, and NY51000)?

Answer

The metropolitan statistical area (MSA) informally called "New York" (Moody's Analytics geo code IUSA_MNEY) consists of 25 counties across three states. It is one of 11 large MSAs that are divided into 31 smaller metropolitan divisions. Of these, the New York metropolitan division (IUSA_DMNEY) consists of 14 counties in two states, five of which comprise New York City proper (NY51000); these five are coextensive with the traditional "boroughs" of the city. By area, the largest borough (or county) of the five is Queens (NY081), at 108 square miles (280 square kilometers). The most populous is Brooklyn (Kings County, NY047), with 2.5 million people (2010 census).

"Long Island" consists of Nassau and Suffolk counties, a.k.a. the Nassau County-Suffolk County metropolitan division (IUSA_DMNAS).

The attachment compares the structure of the New York MSA (with component metro divisions, counties, and boroughs) under the 2000 and 2010 delineations.

Background

Many datasets contain series for the metropolitan divisions instead of the larger MSAs. A few contain both, so take care to avoid double-counting.

Metropolitan statistical areas, metropolitan divisions and related geo types (collectively called "core-based statistical areas") are defined by the U.S. Office of Management and Budget as statistical geographic areas, and are unrelated to administrative geographic areas (i.e., local governments), in part because CBSAs can straddle state boundaries.

We offer a variety of geographic support files in the "Reference Files" section of DataBuffet.com. County- and city-type geographies have geo codes of the forms AAnnn and AAnnnnn, respectively.  Metropolitan statistical areas under the 1990, 2000 and 2010 delineations are, respectively, aaa, Maaa, and IUSA_Maaa.
