Release Information

Import statistics are available by country/territory of origin and/or country/territory of consignment while domestic export figures are analyzed by country/territory of consignment.  For re-exports, merchandise trade statistics are available by country/territory of origin and/or country/territory of consignment.

The concepts and definitions adopted in the compilation of Hong Kong’s merchandise trade statistics are in conformity with the standards recommended by the United Nations in the International Merchandise Trade Statistics - Concepts and Definitions, Revision 2. The “general” system is adopted for compiling trade statistics.

Hong Kong’s merchandise trade statistics are compiled based on information in import/export declarations.

The declarations submitted by importers/exporters are matched against cargo manifests to ensure that there is no omission of declaration.

  • Transaction coverage: Hong Kong’s merchandise trade statistics refer to the movements of merchandise between Hong Kong and her trading partners, by land, air, water and by post.
  • Geographic coverage: Hong Kong’s trade with all countries/territories is included.
  • Conversion to unit of account: Any transaction value in foreign currency is converted to its Hong Kong dollar equivalent based on the exchange rates prevailing at the time of importation/exportation.
  • Valuation: Valuation of goods is based on the transaction values provided by importers/exporters in import/export declarations.  Imports are valued on c.i.f. basis while domestic exports and re-exports are valued on f.o.b. basis.

Adjustments, where necessary, are incorporated in year-to-date figures. The practice is explained in detail in trade statistics publications.
