The statistical territory of merchandise trade statistics coincides with the customs territory of the People's Republic of China (PR China), excluding the separate customs territories of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Province.

The trade balance figure is calculated based on the difference between export and import.

Since 1980, the compilation of Customs statistics follows the concepts and definitions recommended by the United Nations for use in international trade statistics, that is International Merchandise Trade Statistics: Concepts and Definitions, Rev. 2, New York, UN, 1998 (IMTS). The disseminated data include value of total imports and exports in yuans and US dollars with (in US dollars) breakdown by two main categories each of primary and manufactured goods, as well as information by detailed categories, by destination country, foreign enterprises, domestic region, etc.

Customs statistics cover all merchandise which enter or leave the customs territory of PR China and add to or subtract the stock of material sources of China, excluding the following types of goods: temporary imports or exports, goods on lease for less than one year, personal effects of travelers, goods consigned to diplomatic missions, goods for repair and goods in transit.

Imports are recorded on the date when goods are released from Customs. Exports are recorded on the date when goods are cleared from Customs.

The source publishes only current-month and year-ago numbers; hence, only some data are revised.

Jan-Feb release

Every year, the February numbers are initially a cummulative number for Jan-Feb, to minimise seasonal effects of Lunar New Year. We follow the same and not publish the monthly figures for January. Cumulated data will not be affected by this.

The January, February numbers will be revised to monthly numbers when the source, NBS makes them available at a later date.
