Release Information

The International Monetary Fund's (IMF) Balance of Payments database contains balance of payments and international investment position (IIP) data of individual countries, jurisdictions, and other reporting entities; regional and world totals for major components of the balance of payments.  In addition to containing these series and tables denominated in U.S. dollars, the IMF Balance of Payments database contains data as reported by the balance of payments correspondents to the Fund. These latter data are typically denominated in national currency. Conversion is performed by the IMF on the basis of average U.S. dollar/national currency exchange rates for balance of payments data and on end-of-period exchange rates for international investment position data.

The Balance of Payments Statistics Database published by the International Monetary Fund (the Fund), contains balance of payments data that member countries have reported to the Fund. The Fund is indebted to these countries for their cooperation in providing these data. For some of these countries, some data have been supplemented by details Fund economists have derived from other sources.  This database contains the economic time series appearing in the Balance of Payments Statistics Yearbook (BOPSY) also published by the IMF, but generally with more extensive time coverage.

For most countries, balance of payments data are presented in both analytic and standard presentations. As its name implies, the analytic presentation is an analytical summary of the more detailed data contained in the standard presentation. Balance of payments components in the analytic presentation are arrayed to highlight the financing items (the reserves and related items). The standard presentation shows data displayed in the standard components described in the the fifth edition of the Balance of Payments Manual (BPM6). For countries for which IIP statistics are available, the data are presented in the IIP section.

Revisions are common.
