The data are collected by the Continuous Household Survey (Encuesta Continua de Hogares – ECH).  Interviews are conducted in person and are based on the reference period which is the week prior to the interview week.  The survey covers all persons living in private households, including members of the armed forecast.  Persons living in collective households and persons absent for more than six months are excluded.

Economic Activity

Activity status is the relationship between each person and the current economic activity. It is determined by a general classification of the population that establishes whether a person is or is not economically active. The determination of the condition of activity is closely related to minimum age(14 years), and the reference period, which was set in the week prior to the interview.  The determination is also based on definitions and recommendations of the International Labour Organization.

Unemployed definition

According to the international definition unemployed person is someone who for a given reference period simultaneously meets the following characteristics:

  • Doesn’t have job
  • Is available to work
  • Is making specific efforts to get a job.

Employed definition

According to the 13th October 1982 CIET employed person is considered everyone above a specific age who during reference period, such as a week or a day, is in any of the following categories.

In paid employment

  • Working: persons who during the reference period performed some work for wage or salary.
  • With job but not at work: persons who were not working temporarily during the reference period but had a formal attachment to their job.

In independent employment:

  • Working: persons who during the reference period performed some work for profit or family gain.
  • With an enterprise but not at work: persons who, having a company, were temporarily absent from work for a reason specified
