For Chile, the National Institute of Statistics (INE) reports both annual and monthly data on the vital statistics: the number of births, deaths and marriages that occurred in the country. Vital Statistics also document geographical location and demographic characteristics of the population. Vital statistics are used to monitor and evaluate public policies and predict demand for certain goods and services.
All citizens are required, by law, to register in cases of civil marriage, birth, and death. Data is obtained from registrations recorded in local offices. Marriage registrations are correspond to the day and address of the celebration. Registration of a deceased person must be within 3 days of death. Registration of births must be registered with the Office of Civil Registry and Identification that corresponds to the location of the birth.
Currently, death registries may be low due to the law that prohibits burial of corpses if the death of the person has not been registered.
