Annual intercensal estimates by sex and age. The intercensal estimates are based on the Census of Population which is carried out every five years, adjusted for births, deaths and estimated migration. The reference period is April of the year in question.

The definition used for measuring population is the usual residence.

The most recent census was held on 23 April 2006.

Six years retrospection is given for population classified by five-year age groups and sex. The population for the most recent year is broken down by sex and age group, by sex and age group and Regional Authority area (NUTS3). Immigrants are classified by sex, country of origin, nationality and age group for the most recent six years. Emigrants are classified similarly apart from nationality.
