Fore Ireland, the Central Statistics Office (CSO) reports the number of new dwelling completions each quarter, by type of house, area, and electrical connection. Data are reported at the national, regional (NUTS (2013) level 3), and county level. Monthly from 2010.
Prior to this dataset (from the CSO), a Housing Analytics Group was established by the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government (DHPLG). The group came to the conclusion that new dwelling constuction (formerly based on the number of connections to the ESB Network) was being overestimated in the DHPLG publications. As a result of these findings, the DHPLG discontinued their data set The CSO made improvements, added detail and took over the publication. It will continue to be based on ESB connections but will correct over-coverage by using additional information from ESB Networks and incorporating data from other sources. In addition, Eircodes are used in data collection. Eircodes is the recognised identifier for addresses in Ireland but is assigned only when a dwelling is complete and mail is being delivered.
Construction completions are estimated by CSO based in part on connections by ESB (Electricity Supply Board), one of Ireland's electrical grid operators. The "utility connections" dataset is only partially residential.
The data sources include: ESBN Connections, Building Energy Rating (BER), Geodirectory, eStamping, and CSO Census.
The dataset is broken down by:
For the top-line series (urban and rural, all typologies, national), we have back-extended history by 36 years, over the interval 1975Q1 to 2011Q1, using corresponding data from the entity then known as the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government (as of 2020, it has been renamed the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage).
We have constructed a seasonally adjusted (SA) counterpart.
The New Dwelling Completions series is a new Statistical product compiled from third party data sources. The series will be revised on an ongoing basis as more timely and accurate data sources become available and these data sources can be matched to the ESB new connections data set.
