The main objective of the survey is to collect information required by the government for current economic analysis, formulation and implementation of policies and also in monitoring the performance of the Manufacturing Sector. The information collected is published in two monthly publications namely "Index of Industrial Production, Malaysia" and "Monthly Manufacturing Statistics, Malaysia " which are both available at the Users' Service Unit of DOSM.

The Department of Statistics, Malaysia (DOSM) is currently conducting the Monthly Manufacturing Survey, 2006 commencing reference month January 2006. The survey covers 110 out of a total of 197 industries in the Manufacturing Sector (based on the Malaysia Standard Industrial Classification, 2000). This is a mail enquiry survey. Survey questionnaires are mailed to respondents at the beginning of the year and the time given to complete and return a copy of the questionnaire for each reference month is by/before the 10th. of the following month (example: for reference month January 2006, the due date for submission is 10th February 2006).
March 2020 - After conducting the Economic Census 2016 (reference year 2015), Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) has reviewed and carried out the benchmarking process towards the manufacturing statistics collected from the Monthly Manufacturing Survey.
Data is revised each month when new data becomes available.
The latest release data are provisional. The data would be updated based on the latest available figures and would be published in the following month's publication.
It should be noted that the magnitude and/or direction of the sales value of the Manufacturing sector may not necessarily correspond with that of the production indices of the Manufacturing sector which are published in the publication entitled ' Index of Industrial Production, Malaysia'.
