Release Information
Population - The total number of people residing in the Netherlands. In the population statistics compiled by Statistics Netherlands the inhabitants of a given area are the people registered in the population register, whose address is located in that area.
The statistics are based on information received from the municipal population registers (GBA). The data refer to all persons entered into the municipal population registers (the 'de jure' population). Essentially, all persons residing in the Netherlands for an indefinite period of time are entered into the population register of the municipality where they usually spend the night (place of residence). People without fixed abodes but belonging to the 'de jure' population are entered into the population register of the municipality of The Hague. In a limited number of cases the data received by Statistics Netherlands are incomplete. In such cases the missing data are estimated.
