Monthly statistics on retail sales are done for South Africa by Statistics South Africa (Stats SA). Retail Sales Indices show the development of sales revenues. The volume of sales describes the value of turnover represented. The index is considered a quality index.
Publication P6242.1 "Retail trade sales"
"Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) conducts a monthly survey of the retail trade industry, covering retail enterprises. This survey is based on a sample drawn from Stats SA's 2017 business sampling frame (BSF) that contains businesses registered for value added tax (VAT).
In order to improve timeliness, some information for the latest month had to be estimated due to late response. These estimates will be revised in future statistical releases as soon as information becomes available. Published retail trade sales estimates include value added tax (VAT)."
For the "all retailers" SA series, we back-extend prior to 2002m1 (real 1977 to 2001, nominal 1970 to 2001).
The global concept alias WRT.IZAF is assigned to the "all retailers, current prices" series WRL62UM.IZAF.
