Statistics South Africa (Statistics SA) reports quarterly data on the number of employees by industry and gross earnings by industry.

Publication: P0277 - Quarterly Employment Statistics 

Samples for the Quarterly Employment Statistics publication are collected from private non-agricultural businesses as well as national, provincial and local government entitities. Non-agricultural businesses include stores, offices, firms, and factories. 

Industries are defined based off of the System of National Accounts (SNA). Industries covered are: 

  1. Mining and quarrying
  2. Manufacturing
  3. Electricity, gas adn water supply
  4. Construction
  5. Wholesale and retal trade; repar of moto vehicles, motor cycles and personal and household goods; and hotes and restaurants 
  6. Transport, storage and communication
  7. Financial intermediation, insurance, real estate and business services
  8. Community, social and personal services
In addition, these industry definitions follow the Standard Industrial Classification of all Economic Activities (SIC), Fifth Edition.
