BPS-Statistics Indonesia obtains population data via three sources. The Population Census is conducted every 10 years and includes all residents of the entire geographic territory of Republic of Indonesia. This includes those who have stayed for six months or longer, and those who intended to stay even though their length to stay was less than six months. The second source of population data is the Intercensal Population Survey which is conducted by BPS in years ending with 5 such as 1985, 1995, 2005, etc. Lastly, a population projection is calculated annually and is released 6 months after the reference year. The data is categorized into 'rural' and 'urban' population and is presented in thousands of persons and percentage growth.
