For Indonesia, the Retail Sales Survey is a monthly survey seeking information on retail activity by type, region and industry sector, plus consumer sentiment. Its main purpose is to obtain prior information about the moving trend of Gross Domestic Product by Private Consumption.
For sales, Data Buffet banks two sets of series: preliminary plus final (i.e., subject to revision) and finalized only.

Predecessors:
The Retail Sales Survey was first conducted in September 1999. In January 2015 it involved 700 retailers using purposive sampling in 10 cities (Jakarta, Semarang, Bandung, Surabaya, Medan, Purwokerto, Makassar, Manado, Bajarmasin, Denpasar). Respnodents are grouped according to seven industrial classification (KBLI 2009) categories. The index is calculated using commodity weights (based on the Input-Output table) and city weights (based on the share of household consumption in Gross Regional Deomestic Product) relative to GDP. General price projections are calculated using the balanced score method (net balance + 100) using city weights (based on the Cost of Living Survey, SBH).
The survey involves approximately 270 respondents from five regions, viz., Jakarta, Bandung, Semarang, Surabaya and Medan. The correlation between the survey and GDP from private consumption is 0.71 (based on correlation tests in 2001-2008).
Respondents are paneled and classified into nine industry sectors based on the Indonesian Classification by Sectors (KLUI) 1997. The survey encompasses three types of price expectations including the general price, loan interest rates and sales expectations. The price and loan interest rates expectations are calculated by the balance score method (net balance + 100) where an index of more than 100 represents optimism. All results are presented in real index terms.
For the real RSI general index (preliminary with revisions), we produce a seasonally adjusted counterpart.
The data are provisional (preliminary) when initially released and are finalized next month. Data Buffet carries separate "preliminary with revisions" and "final only" subsets.

The Retail Sales Survey does not have a theme-page on the BI site; rather, individual monthly reports are published, in both native Indonesian and in English.
