Release Information

The Kuwaiti balance of payments presentation mostly conforms to the classifications and definitions of the fifth edition of the IMF's "Balance of Payments Manual" ("BPM5").

The balance of payments transactions are classified largely in accordance with standard components of "BPM5". The standard components are classified in five main categories:

  • Current account
  • Capital account
  • Financial account
  • Net other transactions
  • Reserves, a below the line item for the overall balance.

However, within the current account, there are problems in identifying:

(a) detailed service transactions

(b) income components for compensation of employees, direct investment, and portfolio investment.

Within the financial account, there are difficulties in measuring transactions of the nonfinancial private sector with respect to direct, portfolio, and other investments. Reserves are derived from the records of the CBK and thus exclude movements in accounts of the Kuwait Investment Authority, Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC), and other assets that constitute official positions; these elements are distributed, as appropriate, in the financial account in "direct, portfolio", or "other investments".

  • Framework: IMF BPM6
  • Measurement: Millions of Kuwaiti dinar (Mil. KWD)
  • Adjustment: Not seasonally adjusted (NSA)
  • Native frequency: Annual
  • Start date: As early as 1993

Balance of payments data are compiled and disseminated on an annual basis approximately three to four months after the end of the reference period.

Within the five main categories, balance of payments transactions are classified as follows:
