Data are disseminated on the resident population (in thousands) at the end of the month. Data are also disseminated on the number of births, marriages, deaths, immigrants, emigrants and net migration, and natural increase. Censuses are conducted every decade. The last census was conducted in April 2000. The next Population and housing Census in Latvia is planned for the year 2011.

  • Base estimates: Basic data for the calculation for the 1990 year had been taken from the Population Census carried out in Latvia in the year 1989 and for the succeeding years 1991-1999 - at the beginning of the previous year. The number of population in the period between 1990 and 1999 has been revised on the basis of the final results of the 2000 Census. Data for the years following after the 2000 Census are also based on the final results of the 2000 Population and Housing Census.
  • Population census: Censuses are conducted every decade. The most recent census was conducted in April 2000. The next Population and housing Census in Latvia is planned for the year 2011.

  • Urban and rural population: The division of the population into urban and rural population is made according to the declared place of residence.  Persons, who live in cities and towns, comprise the urban population. The Cabinet of Ministers confirms the list of cities and towns. All the rest is rural population.

The data are provisional when first released, marked with a note that they may be revised in forthcoming issues. Specifically, short term (quarterly and monthly) data are revised after completion of processing annual data.

Due to specifics of electronic data processing technologies and rounding adjustments, slight discrepancies may appear between the published data and results of calculations made by data users.
