The Italian National Institute of Statistics (ISTAT) publishes data on Italy's demographic balance each month for national and regional levels. The dataset includes information on live births, deaths, change of residencies, net migration, and the population balance.
Italian and foreign citizens living within national borders must, by law, register in their respective municipality. The legal population is determined based upon the Population Census.
Registrations are reported as a total and include registrations from one Italian municipality to another, change of residence from abroad, and registrations for other reasons. Registrations for other reasons include updating or correcting Census information.
The source notes a break in the time series at 2019. They write (Citation): Starting from the demographic balance of 2019, the reference time is the event date.
Some geographical areas have changed boundaries, but the source reported them as continuous time series. These series carry a bracketed notation indicating the date of the break.
