Employment and wages by ISIC industry for Panama and its provinces. Monthly from 2003.

The economically active population is defined for this research as one that provides the manpower available for the production of goods and services, which in turn, falls under occupied and unemployed.

The employed population refers to persons who:

  • Have an occupation or work for pay in cash or in kind during the period reference.
  • Regularly work in a business or company a member of his own family, for 15 or more hours, even if not paid wages or salary (family worker.)
  • They have paid a fixed occupation, but not exercised any day of the period referenced by a temporary situation due to illness or accident, for labor disputes, for temporary interruption of work or because of bad weather or damage to the machinery, to be in use on vacation, permit or license.
  • Worked during the reference week, but worked for fixed periods.

For its part according to the conditions of occupation, this population is subdivided into:

Employed full: Are those people over 15 years of age working 40 hours or more, who do not seek employment or want to work more hours than worked.

Employed part-time: Those people of 15 years of age working less than 40 hours, not seeking another job, or want to work more hours those working or wishing to work longer hours, but did not seek.

Underemployed by insufficient hours: Includes those who are working less than 40 hours, which met three criteria: they want to work longer hours of that work, seeking work and available

Underemployed due to insufficient income: Thus includes those who are working 40 hours or more and with incomes below the minimum wage

Means wages or salary: the employee receives remuneration for his work in the reference period. This includes overtime pay and commission.

Economic activity

The concept of category in economic activity refers to the sector of the economy, within which the person holds the occupation and applies in this opportunity, to classify population as occupied. For industry classifications, the national classification of all economic acitvities, used in the 2000 Census, based on the United Nations document "International Standard Industrial Classification of All Economic Activities (ISIC), which was developed in 1989 by the International Labour Office (ILO).
