Release Information

The following information is taken from The Official Statistics of Sweden.

Preliminary quarterly data is meant to provide timely information on construction developments with respect to commenced dwellings. New construction refers to the erection of an entirely new building from the foundation.

Statistics on newly constructed buildings illustrate the scope and trends in production. This quarterly dataset provides the number of newly constructed buildings started and completed by type of dwelling (one or two vs multi) for Sweden as a whole, its counties, and its largest cities.

The basis of the statistics comes from the municipalities. These provide information on granted building permits for homes and offices as well as information on completed apartments in newly built and remodeled houses. The material is supplemented by information from the developers. 

To calculate the Seasonally adjusted series, we independentally adjust using the U.S. Census Bureau's X-12 ARIMA program.  They are then squeezed to assure additivity using a top down approach.  Totals are created using identities, for example:

  • HSQCMPTAQ = HSQCMPM2LAQ + HSQCMPAPTAQ

Definitions

Dwelling starts in newly constructed buildings
Due to delays the figures are underestimated for the last quarter with about 25 percent. After one year the figures are about 2 percent.

Dwellings completed in newly constructed buildings
Due to delays the figures are underestimated for the last quarter with about 25 percent. After one year the figures are about 2 percent.

The preliminary data in the tables are updated every quarter to take into account corrections reported by municipalities. Experience shows that the preliminary figures for new construction are underestimated by about 12 percent (on average) for dwellings started and about 8 percent for dwellings completed. The figures for conversion are underestimated by about 18 percent for dwelling starts and about 1 percent for dwellings completed. 

Data are updated each quarter to capture revisions.
