Release Information

For Malta, the detailed quarterly balance of payments presentation is produced jointly by the Central Bank of Malta and National Statistical Office (CBM and NSO). Efforts were undertaken in 1999, 2014 to 2023 to align with international standards.

Active:

  • Framework: IMF BPM6
  • Measurement: Thousands of euros (Ths. EUR)
  • Adjustment: Not seasonally adjusted (NSA)
  • Native frequency: Quarterly
  • Start date: Uniformly 2022Q1

Predecessors:

  • BPM6 - 2013Q2 to 2022Q4 ("_22")
  • BPM5 - 2006Q4 to 2014Q1 ("_B5")

The data is compiled from enterprise survey data, partial settlements system, customs data and other data sources. The quarterly enterprise survey is sent to the top companies from various economic sectors. It covers service and financial account transactions. The data submitted is verified by utilizing the company's balance sheets; permits issued by the Capital Flows Section of the CBM's BoP Office and newspaper clippings among others.

Methodology revision

Beginning with the publication of the "News Release: International Economic and Financial Transcations" for the first quarter of 2023, the source implemented an ad hoc revision in the BoP and International Investment Position (IIP) statistics.

The source writes:

The most important developments underpinning this ad hoc revision are:

  • greater reliance on administrative data in the compilation of statistics relating to corporations that are relevant for the scope of BOP and IIP. The availability of new data sources made it possible to micro-link different databases and these were then complemented with survey data;
  • inclusion of new data sources, such as the database of the Bank for International Settlements, which advanced efforts to capture data on the household sector;
  • the Central Bank of Malta has collaborated with the NSO to introduce data relating to certain sub-sectors of the Other Financial Institutions sector.

Yes. Revisions are conducted on a quarterly basis with the previous data remaining subject to revision.
