Exports correspond to the total value of merchandises that the country sells with the criteria of last known destination. They also include the value of the goods processed with raw materials from abroad (maquiladoras). Imports correspond to the total value of merchandises that the country purchases from the rest of the world. They also include imports of goods for processing (for the inward processing of the maquiladoras).
The conceptual framework for foreign trade statistics follows the guidelines contained in the International Merchandise Trade Statistics: Concepts and Definitions (UN), the International Merchandise Trade Statistics, Compilers Manual (UN) and Balance of Payments Manual (IMF).
Coverage: All the foreign trade transactions are recorded in the customs declarations and the Working Group on Foreign Trade Statistics define the specific transactions to be included in the statistical information taking aware of the guidelines of international recommendations. As mentioned before the Mexican statistics include the imports and exports related to the goods for processing.
Exceptions to coverage:Coverage: the foreign trade statistics exclude in-transit trade, monetary gold, paper money and coin in circulation, fuel and transport services sold to international carriers, personal purchases by residents at the border, and purchases by tourists worth less than US$300 per person.
Data are obtained from records of merchandise entering or leaving the country through the customs, according to the procedures established by the Customs Administration of the Secretariat of Finance.
Data collected: Type of merchandise, identification of the enterprise (importer/exporter), measurement units, volume, value, customs of entry or exit, origin country or destination country, and the date on which the merchandise entered or left the country.
Basis of country data: Statistics for imports are based in the merchandise’s origin country, and in the case of exports are based in the last known destination country.
Data is subject to revisions.
The Mexican foreign trade flows are valued at market prices; likewise, merchandises are valued Free on Board (FOB).
