Population
The population is defined as all persons with usual (main) residence and an actual period of stay in Austria of more then 90 days (3 months) regardless of citizenship.
Population statistics provide information about the number and structure (age, gender, nationality) of the Austrian population.
There are also statistics pertaining to the individual components that are constantly influencing the size and structure of the population, i.e. births, deaths and migration. The population statistics system is augmented by data concerning naturalisations as well as marriages and divorces. The statistics listed above are all available at the federal province level, and most are also available for smaller administrative units (NUTS 2, political districts, municipalities).
The task of population statistics is, furthermore, to compile statistics and indicators based on this data in order to permit more detailed interpretations and demographic analyses. Statistics of this kind may include, for example, the average number of births per woman, the divorce rate or the life expectancy, which can be ascertained from the life tables.
In addition to person-related statistics, population statistics also encompass data about households and families, for instance concerning the frequency of one-person households, specific types of family etc. The Population Census is always accorded a special status. It is a comprehensive population survey and thus supplies statistical results relating not only to demographic matters in the narrower sense but also to many social, educational and labour-force topics.
Finally, forecasts are a key component of the system of population statistics. Besides regionally differentiated population forecasts, they include household and family forecasts and forecasts concerning the number of economically active persons.
Data from the Central Register of Residents (ZMR) concerning valid main residence registrations has been forwarded quarterly to Statistics Austria since 2002. Processing of the databases is based on a uniform concept for classifying registration results for the purposes of demographic analyses. This enables figures relating to the demographic situation on any specific dates to be compiled for all Austrian territorial units according to standard criteria.
