These data are calculated separately.
  • Population census: Population censuses are usually conducted every decade. The latest census' reference date is March 1 2011. Since the restoration of independence in 1990 two censuses were conducted, in 2001 and 2011. For more information please visit: http://www.stat.gov.lt/en/web/guest/gyventoju-ir-bustu-surasymai1
  • Births: For a new-born child, a medical officer shall write out a birth document containing demographic and medical information. Within 3 months after the birth, one of the parents must register the birth at the local Civil Registry Office. The CRO assigns to the child a Personal Identification Number. Record of birth and certificate of birth are issued.
  • Deaths: The authority that confirms the death shall issue a medical certificate of death. The physician is responsible for allocating the cause of death code number. The certificate of death is given to the family of the deceased. The fact of the death must be registered at the local Civil Registry Office where the record of death and certificate of death are issued
  • Data on births, deaths, marriages, divorces and population migration are received from the Resident’s Register. Data of the Resident’s Register are submitted according to the agreement between the Residents’ Register Service under the Ministry of Interior of the Republic of Lithuania and Statistics Lithuania. The updated information from the Residents’ Register is received daily, in on-line mode, in the ORACLE type data format. In the Demographic Database of Statistics Lithuania, data required for the preparation of statistical information are formed using software tools.

Data required for the causes of death statistics are received from the medical death certificates and death records. Civil Registry Offices of cities, towns and districts monthly submit the medical death certificates to Statistics Lithuania where they are coded, and the required information is entered into the Demographic Database of Statistics Lithuania for linking with data on death records.

  • The data on births are calculated by the date of occurrence. The cut-off period is 90 days, and any events in the reference year reported after that time are included in the data for the following year.
  • The data on deaths are calculated by the time of occurrence. The cut-off period is 30 days, and any events in the reference year reported after that time are included in the data for the following year.

Within the forthcoming three days the court shall send the decision to the Civil Registry Office that records the fact of marriage termination.
  • Since 2004, the Residents’ Register data is used to compile the declared migration statistics. In 2006 and 2007, statistical surveys were carried out, based on which undeclared emigration flows, demographic and social characteristics of emigrants in 2001–2006 were estimated.
