Release Information

Stock of dwellings
(as of December 31; useful floor space; in million m2)

Definitions

Stock of dwellings means residential premises in residential houses, non-residential houses, hostels.

Residential buildings (houses) mean buildings where the whole useful floor area or the major part or at least half of it is used for residential purposes.  

Residential building for communities (hostel) is defined as residential premises for the accommodation of schoolchildren, students or employees during the period of studies or work. Children’s homes, orphanages, homes for disabled people, boarding schools, etc. are also ascribed to the residential buildings for communities.

Residential premises mean dwellings in residential and non-residential houses; one-dwelling houses; separate rooms with general use area.

Periodicity of the indicator is annual.

The indicator is produced by the Construction and Investment Statistics Division of Statistics Lithuania.

Statistical data sources

Information on the stock of dwellings is prepared using an annual questionnaire. The survey includes all enterprises, institutions and organizations maintaining at their disposal residential premises; the State Enterprise Centre of Registers provides information on privately-owned residential premises in urban areas; rural wards provide data on privately-owned residential premises of rural residents. The data are collected using the questionnaire “Stock of Dwellings Report GF-01” (http://www.stat.gov.lt) submitted by post, email or fax by 17 January.

Average time for prepared and filling in the report – 1 hour 20 minutes.

Data sources and methods applied

The survey method – census. An aggregation method is used for the survey. The survey is based on the Statistical Register of Business Entities.

Classification of Types of Constructions (CC)

Classification of Administrative Units and Residential Areas of the Republic of Lithuania

The survey covers all counties and municipalities. The results are provided at county and municipal levels.

The response rate is 100 per cent.

The indicator computed according to:

  • Resolution No. 312 of the Government of the Republic of Lithuania of 17 March 1998 on the approval of the procedure for inventory and statistical reporting of residential premises

Purpose and users of the statistical indicator – statistical estimation of the stock of dwellings according to quantitative and qualitative indicators, forms of ownership and location. The main users are national public authorities, mass media, research community, students, international institutions.

Additional statistical data is not applicable.

Comparability

The length of time series of the stock of dwellings indicator is since 1992.

The time series is comparable since 1992. Annual results are compared to the previous year.

There is no analogous information prepared by other divisions of Statistics Lithuania or other institutions.

As of 2014, summerhouses are included.
