Statistics Canada provides statistics that help Canadians better understand their country, with data on population, resources, economy, society and culture. In short, they are often referred to as Statcan. Statcan is legislated to serve as Canada's central statistical agency for the whole of Canada and each of the provinces. Statcan's key socioeconomic database is called CANSIM. A census is conducted every five years and there are about 350 active surveys on virtually all aspects of Canadian life.
